For one weekend only, the amazing Artemis Mourat will be teaching and performing in Minneapolis!


A charming, spirited performer, dedicated instructor and noted dance historian, Artemis has been a featured instructor at Rakkasah and Tribal Revolution among many other workshops across the globe over in her 37 years of experience. She respected and sought after for her broad knowledge of Oriental dance styles and her expertise in Turkish and Romany dance, and her performance coaching. Regardless of what style of dance you perform--Egyptian, Tribal, American Cabaret, Belly Dance Fusion, or something else--you won't want to miss this!

Theatricized Skirt Dancing - SOLD OUT! Saturday 10:30 - 12:30
A fun and sassy way to start the day! Learn technique and combinations for a theatricalized skirt dance that fuses authentic Romany skirt movements with non-Romany dance material. Learn to tell which material is which. Please bring a dance skirt big enough to drape over your shoulder; a very limited number of practice skirts will be available.

Turkish Romany (Gypsy) Dance - SOLD OUT! Saturday 1:30 - 4:30
Discover--or rediscover--the beautiful and powerful dances of the Turkish Romany ("Gypsy") people from one of the top experts in this style! Artemis will separate fact from fiction while you learn the Karsilama rhythm, Romany 9/8 rhythm, Romany gestures, and steps and combinations for both slow and fast versions of the 9/8 rhythm. Time permitting; Artemis will give a short lecture and demonstration on how to play Turkish spoons and when itís appropriate!

Turkish Orientale Sunday 11:00 - 2:00
What makes Turkish Orientale different from Egyptian Orientale? What makes the styles similar? Or are they that much different? Artemis will compare and contrast Turkish and Egyptian Orientale, and dispel misinformation about both. Learn they key elements of Turkish Orientale through traveling steps, turns, hip articulations, abdominal work, knee lifts, and arm postures. Discover how to effectively use these elements with Ciftitelli and 9/8 rhythms, and how you can incorporate your new-found skills into your own repertoire!

Artemis Mourat's Bio - Dancer, Teacher, Writer, Historian

With 37 years of experience, Artemis has been dancing, teaching, and researching dance history in the U.S. and abroad for her entire adult life. Of Greek and Turkish descent, Artemis fuses her love of these cultures with deep academic knowledge and excellent dance technique to present compelling, spirited workshops that include information on the history and cultures that generate the dances. She believes that we can all use art to build bridges across cultures.

Artemis has contributed to many publications. Her travel to 33 countries and intesive research into the idioms of the East, women's issues, psychology, ancient history, Oriental dance, Romany (Gypsy) dance, and dance ethnology have yielded many manuscripts and articles.

Artemis holds an M.A. in psychology and an M.S.W. in social work with specialized studies in cross-cultural awareness. She has also done post graduate work in dance and movement therapy, and field research in ancient dance, Middle Eastern dance, and Roamny dance in Turkey, Romania, Czech Republic, Spain, France, England, Morocco, Tunisia, Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Egypt and Greece. She has attended Romany festivals in France, Turkey and Romany, and has collected footage of Roma people dancing and in everyday life. Artemis' collection of antique photos of Roma and dancers from North Africa and the Middle East is among the largest in the United States, and some illustrations have been used by the International Encyclopedia of Dance, the Smithsonian Institution, the largest Romany museum in the world (Czec Republic), all of the major Middle Eastern Dance publications, and in several books.

When she's not traveling for performances or workshops, Artemis teaches regular classes and private lessons in belly dance in the Bethesda, Maryland area.
