Level 1 Belly Dance Foundations

Class description: These classes are geared toward new beginners and toward returning students who are working to master Level 1 technique and concepts. The class will focus on the building blocks of Middle Eastern dance. We'll break down each of the core movement groups, work on muscle isolations, address proper posture and conditioning for this dance form, introduce terminology, and learn several dance combinations. No previous dance experience is required as we will start from basic concepts; returning students will work on refining technique and committing dance elements to muscle memory. This class provides the proper foundational elements required for all styles of belly dance. Most students will need to take Level 1 at least two times to master the basics and be ready to move on to higher level.


What to wear: Dress comfortably for movement in workout-type clothing. Many people wear yoga pants, a leotard or similar attire with a tank top or t-shirt. Most students and instructors dance barefoot, but if you wish you may wear ballet slippers or other dance shoes. Jeans are typically not comfortable, and outdoor shoes and athletic shoes are not permitted.

Please note: we typically only contact registrants before the session begins if there is a change or a problem with the registration. If you require a confirmation, indicate this on your registration form. Otherwise, you may assume that if you send in your registration and do NOT get a call from us, everything is fine and you are registered! If you need to miss a class, you can take any other regular Aalim School class at either location as a make up class.

Wednesdays 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. (1-1/2 hours) with Cat (Perizada) or Abby (Fareehah)

Thursdays 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. (1-1/2 hours) with Barb (Amara)      
Studio: Mpls-SR (3754 Pleasant Ave S. Minneapolis - 1st floor Sun Room)

Saturdays 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. (1-1/2 hours) with Mirah Ammal      
Studio: Mpls-SR (3754 Pleasant Ave S. Minneapolis - 1st floor Sun Room)

Due to the cumulative nature of the material, first time beginners are strongly encouraged to plan to attend a session rather than drop in for individual classes. Returning level 1 students and/or summer session students can purchase a full session, a 5- or 10-class gypsy card*.
